- Acadia National Park: The crown jewel of Downeast Maine and Mound Desert Island is of course Acadia National Park. From the loop road to Cadillac Mountain there is so much to do (And more off the beaten path. - Downeast Scenic Railroad: Ok, well we do have a thing for trains at Governor’s. Downeast Scenic is headquartered in Ellsworth and gives you an opportunity to check out a passenger train ride. Plus what you might not know is that there is a Steam Engine being restored at Washington Junction! For more information and to book tickets visit the Downeast Scenic RR website
- Union River Dam (Also known as the Ellsworth Dam): Did you know one of the tallest concrete buttress dams in the country was build in 1907 in Ellsworth? It is still operating and is on the national register of historic places. The dam is located just north of downtown Ellsworth.
- Sunrise Trail: The Sunrise trail is an 87 mile long multi use trail that starts at Washington Junction in Ellsworth and heads towards Machias and Calais. It’s a favorite of ATV, Side by Side, and Snowsled enthusiests, along with walkers, bikers, and cross country skiers. Check out more information about the trail here
- Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory: Located up the road in Bucksport is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and the observatory open most of the summer. Get some of the best views in the state of Maine at the tallest bridge observatory in the world. Plus right next door is historic Fort Knox (the one without the gold.) Both are open May through October, and there is a small entry fee. Click here for more information.
- Woodlawn Museum, Gardens, and Park: Tour the historic Black house, outbuildings and the gardens & park featuring two miles of wooded trails and a tournament sized Croquet court. A hidden treasure in the area. For more information visit the Woodlawn official web site.
- Birdsacre: The Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary features over 200 acres of protected woodlands dedicated to preserving the home and vision of ornithologist-photographer Cordelia Stanwood. It’s a great opportunity for bird watching, and there is a nature center with art and animal exhibits. For more information visit the Birdsacre website.
